Before You Move
Time never seems to be on your side as you
expectantly rush toward your moving day, but it is wise to begin preparing at
least two months before you plan to open the door to your new Roland Home. Set
a schedule as far ahead of your moving day as practical. There are at least a
dozen details to take care of before you move:
Notify your insurance companies.
Keep a file of all moving paperwork.
Arrange for school and medical records to be
transferred to your new location. Look over our School and Your Move
guidelines to ease the transition to new schools.
Close out banking accounts, close safety deposit
boxes, and open new accounts in your new location.
File a change of address form with the Post Office
and notify friends, family, credit card companies, government agencies,
magazine publishers, and creditors of your new address.
Cancel newspaper and cancel or transfer local club
memberships.
Schedule disconnection and transfer dates for
telephone service and utilities.
Select a moving company (or arrange for your own
truck and “volunteers”) and provide written driving directions.
Take special care in moving your pets—cats and
dogs can be especially sensitive to the commotion of moving and a new
environment.
Take this opportunity to unclutter your life—clean
out, throw out, and give away things you haven’t used in years. No sense
moving “stuff” you don’t need or want any longer.
Be sure you have your new house keys and plan to
meet the movers at your new Roland Home at a prescribed time to supervise the
move-in.
Packing
We suggest that you carefully choose a dependable
moving company, then determine whether you want them to do the packing, or do
it yourself to save money. If you do the packing yourself, but use a moving
company for the actual hauling, be sure you understand their packing
requirements—they may not accept packed boxes that do not meet their
standards.
Don’t forget to clearly mark the top and at least
one side of each box as to the contents and which room they should be moved
into. Put a bold “Fragile” on boxes of glassware, and a “This End Up” notice
may be helpful for some items.
Be sure to drain fuel and oil from power lawn and
garden tools. Make sure your vital records, valuables and heirlooms are safely
packed and keep them in your personal possession for the move.
